These membranes are made of irregular tight connective tissue. Just below the periosteum is the outer annular system. Just above the endosteum is the inner annular system. Osteons, also known as Haversian systems, fill in between the inner and outer annular systems. In the middle of the osteons are the Haversian canals, through which blood vessels pass. Neighboring Haversian canals converge via Volkmann canals. An adult human skeleton consists of 207 bones. But a newborn baby has close to 300 bones. The reason for this difference is the emergence of new bones as the bones merge over time as a person becomes an adult.
